5 Books to Educate About Sustainability and Environmental Care

Tomorrow, October 4th, marks the end of the month dedicated to the Season of Creation, which we discussed in this article. Additionally, we celebrate the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment, known for his life of humility and love for all creation.

This day provides an opportunity to reflect on peace, simplicity, and respect for nature, following Saint Francis's example. I visited a bookstore to research stories that can help teach children about love for nature, the importance of sustainability, and environmental care.

These are some of the recommendations that have been made to me and I would like to share with you:

Important: If you have other recommendations, I encourage you to share them with us on our social media platforms.

1. “Vive la Naturaleza” (Live nature) by Stéphanie Desbenoit. A practical guide that invites children to discover and care for the environment through activities and colorful illustrations that promote a connection with nature. The book playfully teaches how small gestures can contribute to sustainability.

2. "Plasticus maritimus. Una especie invasora" (Plasticus maritimus: An Invasive Species) by Ana Pêgo is an illustrated book that raises awareness about the serious issue of plastic pollution in the oceans, presenting plastic as an "invasive species." Through scientific data, it encourages young readers to become aware of and take action against marine pollution.

3. "El extraordinario planeta A" (The Extraordinary Planet A) by Martín Barreiro and Ángel Svoboda is a book that explains the key aspects of climate change to young readers, addressing topics such as heavy rainfall, cyclones, droughts, and severe storms. Through illustrations and narratives, presented as a mini-encyclopedia, it emphasizes the importance of caring for planet Earth, making science accessible and fun for everyone.

4. "Basurolandia" (Garbageland) by Ola Woldaúska is an educational book that tackles the problem of waste on our planet in an accessible way. The book highlights the importance of adopting new habits, such as recycling and choosing more sustainable products. It also discusses the impact of waste accumulation and the urgent need to change our relationship with the environment to prevent Earth from becoming a "wasteland."

5. "Cuentos para salvar el planeta" (Stories to Save the Planet) by Anna Casals and Paolo Ferri is an anthology of six illustrated stories aimed at raising awareness among young people about current environmental issues. Each story features children and animals as protagonists facing challenges related to nature, such as ocean pollution, deforestation, and global warming. The tales not only emphasize the importance of caring for the planet but also offer messages of hope, fostering empathy for the environment. At the end of each story, there is an informational sheet with relevant data and actions that readers can take to contribute to a more sustainable future.

+1 "Animales que proteger" (Animals to Protect) by Pascale Hédelin is an illustrated book aimed at sensitizing young readers to the importance of protecting endangered species. Its textured illustrations invite children to explore and learn about animals and their habitats, fostering a deeper connection with nature.
