Tangaza University, is a Catholic University in the Arch-Diocese of Nairobi in Kenya. “Tangaza” is the Kiswahili word, which means to announce or to proclaim. This University began on 30th October 1987 as the School of Theology intending to train the seminarians from different congregations, who become priests in the future. Seeing the needs of society, Tangaza University opened its doors to reach out to the people by introducing different institutes, apart from the School of Theology. These are, the Institute of Education, Institute of Philosophy, Center for Leadership and Management, School of Art and Social Science, Institute of Social Communication, Institute of Youth Studies, Institute of Spirituality and Religious Formation and the Islamic Studies. All these courses are offered in the fulfillment of teaching minds, touching hearts, molding destinies and transforming lives.
Majority of our sisters in the East Africa Province and other students from different parts of Africa and outside the Continent, are witnesses of the power of education received from Tangaza University. The education bears good and sweet fruits in their mission.
It was a bright day on May 2nd, 2024 when Tangaza University College received its charter making its recognition as one of the greatest universities in the Church and the country of Kenya. It was a long journey for Tangaza University College to realize its dream of becoming a university. The celebration of Tangaza University College receiving its charter was a great event that marked the official ceremony that took place. President William Ruto of Kenya played a significant role in the elevation of Tangaza University College to a full University. By awarding the charter, he officially recognizes Tangaza's contribution to higher education in Kenya. The involvement of the President in such an event shows his focus on education as the key pillar for national development. Historically Tangaza was under the Catholic University of Eastern Africa for over thirty years as a constituent College of CUEA, while remaining administratively autonomous, and an integral part of the main University for academic purposes, with an excellent academic arena that is teaching minds, touching hearts, and transforming lives.
Today Tangaza has fulfilled all the requirements to be a university, and its dream has become a reality. The University is dedicated to preparing faithful servants and leaders for both the Church and society in an environment of freedom and responsibility. It is committed to advancing quality education which brings transformation to societies. Tangaza is an institution not only just for Kenyans, it aims to provide a holistic education that is globally recognized. It focusing on becoming a center of excellence in education by shaping future leaders and contributing to the advancement of knowledge and well-being of the societies. Since it has multiple schools, including Theology, Education, and Arts and social science the university aims to further this growth while maintaining its identity.
As students at Tangaza University, we were very happy and proud when the university received its charter, we expressed our joy in being part of an institute that is now recognized as a full university. We see this as an opportunity to further enhance our education as the Religious of the Assumption and contribute to the university's growth, the present moment, and for the coming generations. This event was seen as a significant achievement that marked a year of hard work and dedication by the entire Tangaza community. We thank God for this gift and for the time that has journeyed with each one, the students, and all the staff members we have now grown to depend on ourselves, without forgetting the Catholic University of Eastern Africa for the support.
Tangaza University is now flying towards a New Dawn of greater service to the Church and the society
