Serving life and dignity in rural Tanzania

Iguguno RC Dispensary, managed by the Religious of the Assumption Sisters, was established on 15 June 1994 in Mkalama District, about 30 km from Singida Town, Tanzania.

Who we serve

The dispensary is a first point of care for the most vulnerable members of the local community:

  • Severely ill patients

  • Pregnant women with complications

  • Newborn babies

  • Elderly people

When necessary, patients are referred to larger hospitals, often located far from their homes.

Local context

The population mainly depends on small-scale farming and informal business. However, unpredictable rainfall leads to poor harvests, food insecurity, and widespread poverty, limiting access to timely and adequate healthcare.

The project: building an operating theatre

To respond to urgent medical needs, the dispensary is currently building an operating theatre. This will make it possible to carry out essential surgical procedures, especially caesarean sections, directly on site.

Once completed, the operating theatre will require basic surgical equipment, including:

  • Two operating tables

  • Surgical lamps

Why this matters

The operating theatre will allow life-saving interventions to be performed close to home, reducing delays and risks linked to long transfers.

This project aims to:

  • Save the lives of mothers and newborns

  • Respond quickly to emergency cases and accidents

  • Strengthen local healthcare and human dignity

By improving access to safe surgery, Iguguno RC Dispensary becomes a place where life is protected, hope is restored, and the future is safeguarded.
