The chalice that Pope Leo XIV will use during the Corpus Christi Mass in Madrid has a history deeply linked to our Congregation. The Queen’s Chalice was commissioned by Queen María de las Mercedes of Orléans and Bourbon from the Ansorena jewellery house as a gift for the Religious of the Assumption, with whom she had studied and for whom she had great affection.
More than a century later, in 2022, the Congregation donated it to Cardinal Carlos Osoro, Archbishop Emeritus of Madrid, who in turn entrusted it to the Museum of the Almudena Cathedral, where it has remained until today. It had never before been used in a major celebration. On 4 June 2026, the Pope will take it in his hands at the moment of Communion.
We rejoice that this chalice, born from the friendship between a queen and our sisters, once again occupies the place for which it was created: the altar.
