Victory over death: A Personal Reflection on the Resurrection

V eventMonday, 20 April 2026

The empty tomb remains the most powerful symbol of our faith. As we reflect on the Gospel of Matthew 28:1-10, we are reminded that the cry "Jesus is Risen, Alleluia!" is not just a song of joy, but a profound declaration that He is actively with us. He has achieved the ultimate victory over death, appearing first to Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to share this triumph.

Courage in the Face of the Unknown

When the women first approached the tomb early on Sunday morning, they were met with a sight that sparked immediate fear: the stone rolled away and the linen cloths lying empty. Their initial instinct was dread—the worry that someone had stolen their Lord. Yet, their deep faith and determination pushed them past that fear.

When the angel spoke, saying, "Do not be afraid," for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified, it shifted their perspective from mourning a loss to seeking a miracle. Their love for Jesus was so great that even in their trembling, they found the courage to ask where He was, proving that He had truly become their source of life.

From Fear to Proclamation

The experience of the resurrected Jesus was trans-formative:

The Angel’s Message: By announcing that He had risen, the angel allowed the women to truly experience the presence of the resurrected Lord.

A Call to Action: Jesus greeted them and instructed them to tell the disciples to go to Galilee.

The Birth of Hope: This directive brought immense hope to the women, who became the first witnesses to the victory over death—a proclamation eventually accepted by all the disciples.

Bringing the Victory to Our World

Today, as we celebrate Easter, we rejoice in the fact that Jesus conquered death through His passion and suffering on the cross. This victory isn't just a historical event; it is a living force that brings peace, justice, and equality to our nations.

In a world often defined by tension, turmoil, and chaos, it is easy for our hearts to feel unstable and our faith in the Gospel to waver. However, the Resurrection calls us to:

Be Grateful: Acknowledge the life we have received through His sacrifice.

Be Faithful: Choose to remain gentle and steadfast as we face the challenges of life.

Be Patient: Ask for the courage to endure hardships while hoping for the betterment of all.

May the resurrected Jesus show us the way forward, and may this Easter season bring a deep sense of joy, peace, and love to our communities and our families.
