And you, what would you do if God called you by your name?

A eventWednesday, 21 May 2025

Discover what a vocation is and how to find yours.

It all began with a question. Not spoken aloud. Not a shout. More like a whisper to the heart.

For Marta, an architecture student, it came in the middle of a volunteer experience: "What if my life could be more than designing buildings? What if I could build hope?" For Sergio, a high school teacher, it came while preparing a lesson on the meaning of life: "What if teaching were just the beginning?"

That is how a vocation is born: not as an imposition, but as an invitation. A personal, unique call. A "Follow me," like the one Jesus addressed to Peter, to John, to Matthew… and today, maybe to you.

What is a vocation?

A vocation is more than a career or a life project. It is the response to a call from God that touches the very core of who you are. It is the discovery that you are not here by chance, and that your life can become a gift to others. As Saint Marie Eugenie said:

"To transform society through the Gospel, starting from the depths of the heart."

What types of vocation are there?

Every Christian is called to something great. Not all in the same way, but all with the same Love as origin and destiny.

  • Lay vocation: People who, without belonging to a religious congregation, live out their faith in the world. Mothers, fathers, young people, professionals… building the Kingdom through their daily lives, with joy and commitment. Example: the young people of the Assumption Family who work for justice, peace, and care for the Earth.
  • Vocation to marriage: Loving the other as Christ loves: unconditionally, faithfully, selflessly. Making the family a domestic church.
  • Consecrated vocation: Sisters, brothers, monks, nuns… who leave everything to follow Jesus more closely. They live in community, pray, serve, teach, and accompany others. Example: the Sisters of the Assumption, present in more than 30 countries, educating, proclaiming the Gospel, and walking alongside the poor.
  • Priestly vocation: Those called to be shepherds of God's people. Celebrating the sacraments, preaching the Word, guiding the community. A vocation of total dedication.
  • Missionary vocation: Some are ignited with the desire to take the Gospel beyond borders. They cross not only countries, but also prejudices and barriers, becoming brothers and sisters to all.

How can you know which one is yours?

Listen. Ask. Dare. God does not speak through megaphones, but through peace in the heart. Pope Francis says it clearly:

"Vocation is a call of love to love."

You don’t need to be 100% sure. You just need to open your heart. The rest… He will take care of.

And you… do you already know what you would do if God called you by your name?

  • Start by listening.
  • Talk to someone who lives their vocation with joy.
  • And don’t be afraid to ask: “Lord, what do you want from me?”
