As part of the Jubilee of the Educational World, Pope Leo XIV met with educators from across the globe, sharing an inspiring message. Speaking to those who dedicate their lives to forming children, young people, and adults, the Pope emphasized the importance of education centered on the person—beyond classrooms, libraries, and technologies.
Four words guided his address: interiority, unity, love, and joy.
Interiority: The true teacher is within, reminds us Saint Augustine. Teaching is not merely the transmission of knowledge; it is accompanying each student in their encounter with truth and with themselves.
Unity: To learn and to educate is to walk together, in communion, recognizing that our being does not belong to us alone, but to the community.
Love: Sharing knowledge without love is not enough. The Pope highlights that to educate is an act of care, attentiveness, and openness towards the most vulnerable.
Joy: True education awakens smiles in the soul; it is human and close, capable of kindling the passion for learning and for life.
This discourse invites us to rethink our educational mission, reminding us that to teach is not only to shape minds, but to transform hearts and communities.
