Province of Central America and Cuba: Holy Week Mission, a Journey of Giving and Receiving

P eventWednesday, 03 July 2024

It is not enough to make trips to the borders from time to time, bring a donation, make a shocking report and launch it into the media torrent that spreads throughout the world. It is not even enough to stay for some time. It is necessary to take deep roots in border realities to be solidly rooted, to belong to that world, to be from there. (Benjamín González Buelta, Time to create, p. 19)

My name is Mirna Erodita Zamora Deras, I am currently in the Community of León, Nicaragua, I am part of the Central America and Cuba Province.

During Holy Week this year, I participated in the mission that we organized as the Assumption School, to go to the Community of Lechecuagos, in León Nicaragua. This mission was more than a simple trip. It was a profound encounter with the very essence of Holy Week and its most transcendental meaning.

During those days, we had the opportunity to be with those most in need, finding in them the living presence of Christ.  Holy Week offers us a special time to intensify our relationship with the Lord Jesus, immersing ourselves in the contemplation and celebration of His Paschal Mystery.

The legacy of Jesus is clear and forceful: He shows us the way to follow, teaches us how to act and urges us to witness values in our daily lives. Love is the key that opens the door to put this life project into practice, and in this mission, we have lived that love in a tangible way.

During the mission, we visited homes where loneliness and basic needs are part of daily reality. We were able to share food, the Word of God, bring a message of hope and listen to the stories and wishes of those who are often forgotten by society.

On this mission I was with other people: a Sister from my Community, students and alumni, teachers from our school, people from the local community, young people in vocational discernment. Each and every one of us witnessed the transforming force of love in action; each smile, each hug, each gesture of solidarity has been a reminder of the true meaning of Holy Week: giving and receiving love unconditionally.

This mission has reminded us that true greatness lies in serving, in giving what we have to make the world a better place. Through our actions, we have been instruments of peace, hope and love, bringing the light of the Resurrection to those who need it most.

May this Easter renew us on our path of faith and inspire us to be bearers of the light and love of Christ in our environment.

Happy Easter!

Let us rejoice because Christ has defeated death, His sacrifice has opened the doors to eternal life for us.
