Today begins the Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, who will be meeting all month under the motto: For a synodal Church: communion, participation and mission.
The Synod of Bishops is a consultative body that calls on bishops from around the world to participate in the governance of the Church, advising the Pope on matters of concern to the universal Church. The word “synod” derives from Greek and expresses the idea of "walking together". This is probably the Synod we have heard the most about.
It is, above all, a spiritual event, of prayer and listening to the Holy Spirit.
I propose that we pray. For the men and women, religious and lay people who will be present there. Especially for the hearts most reluctant to change. Because everyone's voice is heard and everyone is taken into account. Because as Pope Francis said at the WYD this summer: “In this Church we all fit, all, all.” May the Spirit blow, inspire and spread the enthusiasm for Love.
Let's not just stop at praying. Let's open our hearts to the people around us, let's listen to them to know what they need. It is not necessary to go far away, just open your ears to the teacher who does the best he can, to the mother who is always involved in everything, to the sister who is worried today, to the child who needs attention, to the committed layman who wants a better Church... and to one who has been one but is gone.
